Contemporary art in the form in which we are accustomed to seeing it was formed in the 60-70s. XX century. This is a time of searching for alternatives to modernism, or rather searching for new images, new means and materials of expression. As a result, the term “postmodernism” appeared. As a rule, in this regard, this stage is considered from the point of view of analysis and interpretation of traditional forms of art. But at the turn of the 70s. years, a new movement appeared, a new way of expressing works of art, a new form called “living sculpture”. This process has been greatly influenced by the development of technology.
The attraction itself of living sculptures, which can now be seen in large numbers on the streets of European cities, was invented by three mimes, immigrants from Latin America - Tonio, Pepe and Paco. Both the actors and the work itself were called mimes. As a rule, these were everyday scenes that were written by the improvisers themselves and performed on city streets, in taverns and private houses. The concept of mime firmly came into use already in the first half of the 1st century. BC. in the Roman Empire remained in this territory after the collapse of the Roman Empire, but under a different name comedia del’ arte.
The word mime comes from the Greek mimesis, which means “imitation.” The goal of the mime was to amuse the audience, and a wide variety of means were used for this, for example, methods of farcical buffoonery: shouting, jokes, fights. But the most important role was played by movements and gestures, which are the main factor in reflecting emotions. The plots could be varied: from mythological to the most ordinary, everyday ones. The action was played out in a comic way, which was emphasized by funny gestures and funny grimaces. And unlike ordinary actors, mimes played without masks.
Today, pantomime, as the performance of mimes is called, has gone far beyond the scope of a theatrical production. “Living sculpture”, which is now present in abundance on the streets of many cities, is a certain transformation of the image of mimes. A “living statue” is a type of street pantomime where a mime actor, fully made up, imitates a statue made of marble or metal. Professional actors do not become “living statues”, since although this work is very hard and requires patience, at the same time acting skills are not required in this type of activity. Many “living sculptures” can stay in one place for quite a long time - for several months, and then move to another place or change jobs. Becoming an image of a “living sculpture” in a European city is not so easy, since this is one of the attractions that people strive to see and therefore applicants undergo a competitive selection in the municipality, after which they either receive permission to operate, or their image needs to be improved. Typically, each street mime has his own place and his own work schedule, which is on the street for 10-12 hours.
The main distinguishing feature of a “living statue” is the complete absence of any movements over a long period of time. Of course, such work is very difficult. People who do this must not only have patience, but also be artistic, because as soon as a passer-by throws a coin into the mime's hat, he must perform a small scene to lure other passers-by and make them want to throw more.
An external resemblance to a statue is achieved by uniformly applying a layer of makeup and paint to the clothes, face and body of the actor, imitating real monuments.
Preparing the image begins with the costume, which is the main component of the street performance, because passers-by are staring at it. If the character is very attractive, then there will be increased attention to him.
Make-up is also important, since without it there will be no complete impression of the image, in addition, it helps to achieve a mirror-like resemblance.
And of course, it is impossible to imagine a “living statue” without accessories that complement the image.
The choice of character for each actor is different and depends on internal needs, desires and many other personal factors, since the performance of a street mime is a small performance that gives a animated character to its audience.
Before performing directly in public, acting is practiced, that is, what the mime will do to surprise people passing by. This is preceded by some work, since it is necessary to know the history of the image before playing it.

Polenov with the installation “Golden Potato Tambov”. A project for a future installation was created, which was supposed to not only arouse interest in potatoes as a product, but also show that they can be used as an artistic material, but of course after appropriate processing. The result was a kind of podium on which the silhouette of the city of Tambov is presented, made of potatoes coated with gold paint, symbolizing by its appearance the importance of this product for residents of the area. The podium also featured items related to growing, harvesting and processing potatoes.
A small miniature sculpture of a bag of potatoes, made by Tambov master Nikolsky A.V. made of silver and gold, was the decoration of this installation.
In addition, to revive this composition, so-called “living” sculptures of potato pickers were used for the first time in Tambov. The artists portraying the pickers were students of the Cultural Studies department of the University named after G.R. Derzhavin, and the costumes were modeled and made independently, as well as the makeup. The sculptures, just like everywhere else, were motionless until someone approached them, after which they performed an arbitrary bow, and some received
as a gift, a surprise in the form of “golden” or “silver” potatoes. This delighted all the city residents, arousing genuine interest.
